Do you search Green?

Well now you can!! Search with ECOCHO. For every 1000 searches made, Ecocho grows 2 trees - this offsets a ton of greenhouse gases. They pay for the trees via ads on the site. Add it to your toolbar today!

Get out that sewing machine or find a fiend with one. Set aside a day to

Make your own Grocery Bags and Produce Bags!!

You may just call up a bunch of friends and get a assembly line going! You’d be amazed what you can get done with a little help from your friends!

I’ve found some excellent tutorials for you if you’re not quite sure where to start:

A tutorial on Produce bags using Old Sheer Curtains!
http://wisdomofthemoon.blogspot.com/2008/01/cheap-easy-fabric-produce-bags.html
If you don’t have old sheers check out your thrift store or yard sales in the area. Put word out to some of your friends too someone is bound to have something stashed away they’d be more than happy to give you.

A very basic pattern for a drawstring bag
http://www.jamesriser.com/Magic/SmallBags/Instructions.html
These instructions show a great quick and easy way to make your drawstring bag. They are using heavy material for perhaps a gift bag but for a veggie bag we recommend a light weight unbleached cotton.

Now once you’ve mastered the Veggie bags you’re more than ready to go onto the

Grocery Bags!

This is a rather different way to sew a grocery bag. You make your own straps from the same material.

Grocery bags from old Bed Sheets.

http://wisdomofthemoon.blogspot.com/2008/01/cheap-easy-fabric-grocery-bags.html
I have a ton of old sheets in my cupboards and I refuse to toss them they always come in handy for drop cloths but now I can make shopping bags!

They use nylon webbed handle but as in the first site I think I would just make mine out of the same material. Remember. If you do use webbing on the handles and your bags wear out Re Use the Webbing! That stuff lasts for ever!

If you can use old bed sheets think of the other things around you can use! How bout an old bed spread or old Jeans. Not enough material for a full piece? Then make patchwork bags! Get fancy! Take all kinds of scraps from old clothes bedding scrap material from sewing projects and sew it all together in a big piece. Place your pattern or do your measurements on the mish mash of materials and cut bags. You can always line them with a plain cotton fabric or bed sheet and you’ll have a really original bag! The sy is the limit use your imagination and have fun!

Feed Bag Bags!

http://www.curbly.com/stephee/posts/2064-Make-a-bird-seed-bag-grocery-tote-

Hot Dam! Lookie at these! Anyone out there feed birds or other animals and get those big 50 lb nylon feed bags? Here’s a fantastic way to recycle them! Sew them into Grocery Bags!! Now this I must give a try to since we have tons of feed bags from chicken supplement. If you really like these ones go to a feed store and ask if they can give you the name of someone close that uses lots of these bags.. Contact those folks and ask if they’ll save them for you. Once you tell them what they’re for they will be happy to I’m sure.. Or they’ll just think you’re nuts *L*..

Here’s another bag made from a large Rice Bag!

These would probably be readily available from Chinese food restaurants!

Yet ANOTHER great idea to Make reusable bags out of that mound of Old Plastic Grocery Bags!
http://etsylabs.blogspot.com/2007/05/long-overdue-fusing-plastic-bag.html
Man I would never have thought of this one! Take all your grocery bags out of that cupboard you have them crammed into and give this idea a try!

In this months Oracle I mentioned in my column about decorating your bags. You’ll have to pop over to The Arts and Crafts Guild here in Rose willow for those instructions to be posted soon

As you can see there are endless ideas and alternatives to plastic bags. If you haven’t started using recyclable bags please do. Let’s do away with plastic grocery bags and produce bags if we can and refuse paper to save a few trees too. Go GREEN!!!
